Your First Appointment

At Curtis and Barysenka Sycamore Orthodontics, our goal is to make your first appointment as comfortable as possible and we do believe this appointment is the most important one. Doctor’s offices can be intimidating, especially to younger children. We want to assure you that your experience at Sycamore Orthodontics will be painless and fun.
During your first appointment at Curtis and Barysenka Sycamore Orthodontics, our primary goal is to determine if you are ready for treatment, to address any questions or concerns you might have and to develop a preliminary personalized treatment plan to address your needs.

Invisalign

First

Invisalign First is the newest choice for childhood orthodontics. It is specifically designed for young children who have a mixture of baby teeth and permanent teeth. It can be used to correct arch problems by gradually expanding a child’s jawline.

Invisalign

Teen

Teens have their own option for barely noticeable orthodontic appliances—Invisalign Teen. This treatment is almost the same as Invisalign for adults, except the clear aligners have a small blue dot on them, which allows parents to see whether their teens are wearing the braces or not. Additionally, Invisalign Teen comes with more aligners than the traditional package, allowing for the possibility that teens may lose or break their trays.

What to Expect

You will be warmly greeted by our treatment coordinator and front desk team. After providing a tour of the office and completing all the necessary paperwork, appropriate diagnostic records will be taken. Most patients will require a series of intra- and extraoral photos and a panoramic X-ray. These records are needed to visualize you teeth, facial features, and jaw relationship. X-rays can help us determine the position of all erupted and unerupted teeth.

After reviewing these records with the treatment coordinator, Dr. B will join you in the consultation room to examine your smile and discuss your individualized treatment plan and treatment options that are available to you. We will discuss every aspect of your smile in full detail and propose a solution to get the improvement you want. Sometimes there are various options to achieve the desired result (braces vs Invisalign). Dr. Barysenka will discuss every detail and educate you every step of the way so you can make the most informed decision.

Our treatment coordinator and Dr. Barysenka will explain the treatment process with you and walk you through the next steps and appointments that will follow.

Based on your treatment difficulty, expected treatment time and appliances needed, our treatment coordinator will present you the treatment fees and payment options, including no interest in-office financing if needed.

At the end of the appointment or same day via email, you will receive a summary of findings and proposed solutions that were discussed during the consultation so you can further review it at home and discuss with your loved ones involved in the decision making process.

If you or your child are ready for treatment, impressions will be taken to help Dr. B determine an individualized treatment plan. Any additional X-rays can be taken at this time, as well.

Every mouth is different, and every patient needs a unique approach to orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Barysenka makes sure his patients and their parents are completely comfortable and know what to expect at all times.

When we get all your questions answered and you are ready to move forward, we will assist you with scheduling the next appointment to start your treatment.

Jawbones:

To Help You Prepare

Your initial consultation appointment will take approximately 1 hour. When you are ready to get you treatment started, the appliance placement appointment is the longest out of your orthodontic treatment journey and may take between 1.5-2 hours. Most routine appointments average 15 to 30 minutes. We offer before- and after-school appointments for our patients, Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 4 pm. Any appointments longer than 30 minutes are most often scheduled between 9 am and 2 pm.

Typically, you will need to see Dr. Barysenka every six to ten weeks to determine how your treatment is progressing and to make adjustments if needed. Orthodontic treatment is a partnership between the doctor and the patient — while the doctor can set a patient up for success, it is up to the individual to follow through with instructions. Whether you need braces or other treatment, you want to make the most of it!

Choosing the Optimal Time for Treatment:

While the age that kids get braces may vary, orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, and some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are treated early. If it appears that treatment will be needed, Dr. Barysenka can advise you as to the ideal time to begin.

OTHER REASONS FOR

Early Treatment

  • Oral habits such as thumb/finger sucking
  • Severe protrusion of upper or lower incisors with increased risk of trauma when teeth are not fully covered by the lip at rest
  • Severe skeletal discrepancies when the lower jaw is far ahead of the upper jaw and lower anterior teeth are in front of the upper teeth
  • Diagnosed breathing issues and snoring that, in some cases, can be improved by upper arch expansion

Treatment

Sub heading

  • Expanders
  • Headgear to help guide skeletal growth if needed
  • Removable retainers
  • Space maintainers
  • Supervised extraction of baby teeth to allow more room for permanent teeth
  • Short-term limited braces on select teeth
  • Invisalign First, a clear removable orthodontic appliance that help substitute some of the other treatment options if esthetics is the priority

Here’s how it works

The length of your treatment time depends on the original position of your teeth, but most patients require about 10 to 18 months of treatment.

1

The experts in our Sycamore office use 3D technology and molds of your teeth to create a series of clear removable aligners that straighten teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets.

2

Before you take the first set of aligners home, we will examine your smile to ensure that they fit correctly.

3

You wear each of the aligners for about two weeks, removing them when you eat, drink, brush and floss. Each of the aligners is uniquely fitted to slowly move your teeth into the proper position.

4

You will return to our office every six weeks to pick up your next set of trays. This is also an opportunity for the doctor to examine the progress of your treatment, the health of your teeth and gums, and to answer any questions you might have.
